Welcome to the Mifflin County School District. The health suite is open from 8:00 a.m. til 3:30 p.m.   Please speak directly to the school nurse in regard to all illnesses & injuries that your child may have. We will do our best to attain and maintain the optimal health status of all students so they may receive maximum benefit from their educational experiences.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS:  Please be sure your emergency contacts and phone number are updated and on file in the nurse office in case your child becomes ill or is injured at school.

When to Keep Your Child Home 

• Temperature of 100 Degrees or Higher. Temperature should be normal
without medication for 24 hours before returning to class.
• Vomiting and Diarrhea 

• Persistant Cough or Thick Nasal Discharge
• Eyes: Red, Ithcy, or with a Discharge
• Earache
• Persistent Itching of the Scalp: If you suspect your child
may have head lice, call your school’s nurse
to have your child checked before he/she
goes to the classroom. If positive for head lice,
the child must be cleared by the school nurse before riding the bus
or reentering school.
• Rash: Persistant Itching over the body 

Your child should remain at home until these symptoms are resolved or medically treated. 
 

 

Physical and Dental Examination Requirements

 

All students are required to have a physical examination upon entry into school for kindergarten, in  6th grade and in 11th grade.  All students are required to have a dental examination upon entry into school for kindergarten, in 3rd grade and in 7th grade.  School dental screenings are offered in the Spring each school year.  It is preferred that your family dentist completes this examination. Forms are available in the office or on the school website.

Hearing and Vision Screenings
 

Screenings are conducted by the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit in the Fall of each school year.  If your child fails the screening he/she are re-tested by the school nurse.  If they fail the secondary screening a referral is sent home and your child will require further evaluation by their primary care physician or eye doctor.  The referral must be returned to the school nurse.  If your child is prescribed glasses or a hearing device they should be worn to school every day.
 

Height, Weight and BMI Report
 

Pennsylvania School Health Code requires the recording of height, weight and body mass index for each school year.  These results are available to view on the parent access site in Skyward.  If you prefer a paper copy please let your school nurse know.
 

Updated Health History
 

Please be sure to complete the health information form that is sent home with your child.  It is very important that your school nurse has current information.  If your child’s health changes throughout the school year please inform your school nurse.  This should include any medication that is prescribed as well as any new medical issues.

Medication in School
 

Medication should only be given in school if absolutely necessary per district policy.  It is preferred all medication be administered at home.  In the event that medication must be administered at school the physician must provide a written order for the medication and parent or guardian must provide written consent.  Medication forms are available in the office or on the school website.  The medication must be brought to the school by the parent or guardian in a labeled pharmacy container.  Medication will not be administered unless these requirements are met.

Food Allergies

 

Today 1 in 13 children have a food allergy. Today 1 in 13 children have a food allergy.  Food allergies claim 150 lives each year and result in more than 125,000 emergency room visits. We have many students in the Mifflin County School District with food allergies.  We trust that you will adhere to and respect any request from your child’s teacher when dealing with this situation. ** Please be certain to inform school nurses if food allergies change.

Immunizations

The Department of Health is changing school immunizations regulations beginning in August 2017. The regulations are intended to ensure that children attending school in the commonwealth are adequately protected against potential outbreak of vaccine preventable diseases.

 

What you need to know:

· All immunizations must be on file and up to date by the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

 

· If your child is behind schedule on immunizations a medical certificate signed by the child’s physician must be provided setting out the schedule for the remaining doses. The medical certificate must be on file with the school within the first five (5) days of the start of school year, or your child will be excluded per Pennsylvania state law.  This date will be September 1, 2017.

 

· If documentation of all required immunizations as noted below for 2017-2018 school year have not been received or a medical certificate is not on file, your child will not be permitted to attend school, and any days missed for this will be considered an illegal absence.
